Summary
For most laser printers, the toner is supplied in a cartridge that is installed in the printer.When the cartridge is empty, it have to be replaced or recharged. Typically, thousands of pages can be printed with a toner cartridge. Laser printers such as Hewlett-Packard and Canon printers use "complete" toner cartridges - one piece toner and photoconductor drum arecontaining in the shell. Other companies such as Brother, Lexmark and Okidata, for some models of machines, toner cartridges and photoconductors are separated.In theory, the advantage of this solution is to decrease total cost per printed page, since the photoconductor cartridge is replaced after only a few exchanges of the toner cartridge.
Operation
Toner is a powder made up of two basic ingredients which areelectrically charged: pigment (carbon black) and plastic. At first it was only the toner powder carbon to beused in laser printers and copiers to print on paper. Carbon is the ninth most abundant chemical element in nature and is combined in hundreds of thousands of compounds, among which includes all the organic substances. The carbon appears, therefore, in all living species - animals and plants - as well as those originating in fossil fuel such as coal and oil. In the non-combined, black carbon, or free, is the predominant component of some products with great industrial importance, among them the coke, charcoal, graphite, charcoal and carbon black. These products are used in a wide range of applications. Carbon black, also known as carbon black (from English "carbon black"), consists of finely divided particles, which are obtained by thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) or partial combustion of hydrocarbon gases or liquids.
Carbon black has two properties that define the absolute majority of its applications: high power of pigmentation and ability to blend in with the rubber, substantially increase the mechanical strength of these materials.
A polymerwas recently added to that same carbon powderto improve print quality. Although this polymer is different from one manufacturer to another, the basic polymers used are styrene acrylate copolymer and polyester resin. The size of toner particles range 5-15 micrometers.
There are two models of toner cartridges on the market: the complete cartridge, which contains one-piece toner cartridge and the photoconductor drum (such asHP toner cartridges) and separate cartridge, which consists only of the toner cartridge. The toner cartridge is composed of a plastic structure with a reservoir of toner (a kind of capsule cylindrical or rectangular). The toner cartridge can be removed where the equipment is installed, allowing its rapid replacement.
Several companies remanufacture toner cartridges, offering the same yield and quality of the originals at a cost that reaches 50% of the original cartridge. Take HP LaserJet P2035 for example, the remanufactured HP 05A toner is about $30 while original HP CE505A costs about $80. That's really a huge difference. Isn't it?
