Product Review: HP Deskjet Printer (Model F4180)

While my old HP printer lasted only two years (with very infrequent use), I decided I wanted another HP printer simply because I had saved the plugs in case of an emergency. While my old one had been discontinued, I was able to find a similar one that has a fax, copy, print, and scan feature at my local Target store for $60. I thought this was a great price and this one was $30 less than my previous one. So without hesitation, I took my HP Deskjet F4180 home with me.

The fun began at installation. While my last HP printer came with everything that I needed, this one tells me (after I am already home and have the box open on the floor) that I need a USB cable. Unlike my previous HP Deskjet from two years ago, this new one does not come with a USB cord. Thankfully, I pulled out my saved cords from the previous printer and was able to recycle one of them.

Next came time to install the software. After I uninstalled the old software, the new one took twice as long. Unnecessary icons and messages such as: "order supplies online" and messages like "update software now" are permanently either on my desktop or keep popping up. While I know I am probably at fault because I chose the "easy installation" over the "custom instillation", they really should ask the consumer if we want this on our desktop rather than assume it. Besides, I don't order my print cartridge refills online; I buy them at Target.

Additionally, before I could do anything the stupid "align your cartridges" paper printed out during the course of the installation, not one, not two, but three times. I really wish there was a way to permanently disable this feature, as I am tired of losing all of the ink to unnecessary printing. I think all HP printers are like this because my old one would do this every time I went to print something.

When I finally was able to print something, it printed fast and efficiently. The print quality was not the best, but I did not have it on the best setting so that could be the reason why it did not turn out perfectly. Overall, I thought I was going to be impressed with my new printer. After the align cartridges paper kept printing repeatedly and the fact that HP took the liberty to install features on my computer that I did not want there, I think I may end up selecting another printer next time. If you do purchase a HP Deskjet F4180, do not let the cheap price deceive you, as you will be spending more than that on ink refills. Also, make sure you have a USB cable to connect the printer with the computer. If not, pick one up while you are still at the store to save yourself the aggravation of having to make a return trip to the store.
