An Overview of Toner Cartridges
A definition of what they are, what they do and how the function.Toner cartridges are used in laser printers and photocopiers. These cartridges are much larger than inkjet cartridges and more expensive to replace. The primary difference between the inkjet cartridges and toner cartridges is that toner cartridges use a dry ink (powder) which binds to the paper during the printing process.

How toner cartridges work
In order for letters and images to be printed on paper using a laser printer, a positive charge is sent to the photoconductive rolling drum via either a charge corona wire or a charged roller which forces the drum to revolve. A small laser beam is then fired across the surface of the revolving drum causing an electrostatic image of the letters or printers to form on the drum. Once the image is complete, the toner powder is released onto the drum. As the toner is positively charged, it only sticks to the negative discharged areas of the drum which contains the electrostatic image.Now that the image is ready to be printed, the loaded paper receives a negative charge from the transfer corona wire or charged roller before being rolled under the drum. As the negative charge on the paper is stronger than that of the electrostatic image on the drum, the toner powder is pulled off the drum and onto the paper.
Before being pushed onto the output tray the paper is passed through the fuser, a pair of heated rollers, where the heat from the fuser causes the toner powder to melt and bind with the paper.
How toner powder is made
Laser toners use a special toner powder, which is the equivalent of the ink used in inkjet cartridges. The composition of the toner powder varies between manufacturers, however the polymers most commonly used in the creation of the powder are styrene acrylate copolymers and styrene butadiene copolymers. Styrene acrylate copolymers are a type of polyester (plastic) resin, whereas styrene butadiene copolymers contain a rubber element.Historically toner particles ranged in size and shape since the ingredients were compounded together into a slab and then reduced into the powder format using air jet milling. This inconsistency in their manufacture resulted in a variance in quality. As the technology evolved, manufacturers have been able to improve the print resolution by reducing the particle size through a technology known as Emulsion Aggregation.
Since then manufacturers have refined the overall creation process enabling them to create an even finer powder by growing toner particles from molecular agents using a chemical process. The result is better quality colour reproduction as the toner particles are more consistent in shape and size, and the powder itself is much finer.

Types of toner cartridges
Toner cartridges are available in several colours including black, magenta, cyan and yellow and there are three main types of toner cartridges available for purchase: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) toner cartridges; remanufactured toner cartridges and generic toner cartridges.Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) toner cartridges
These are the toner cartridges supplied by the manufacturer of the laser printer or photocopier. They are the most expensive toner cartridges available but guarantee the optimum resolution and quality for the printer. OEM cartridges generally can only be used with the manufacturer's product, ie. laser toners manufactured by Hewlett Packard may only be used with their range of printers and will not function in an Epson laser printer.Remanufactured toner cartridges
Remanufactured toner cartridges are used cartridges which have been dismantled and cleaned. Any worn parts are replaced and the drums are also either recoated or replaced. Once the unit has been filled with fresh toner powder, it is tested before being resold. These cartridges are normally less expensive than original, or OEM, cartridges and in some instances can actually exceed the quality and yield of the original cartridge.Generic toner cartridges
Generic toner cartridges are compatible with various laser printers, however they do not carry the manufacturers label and in most cases are produced by third party companies. They are a less expensive alternative to OEM and remanufactured toner cartridges, but the quality and resolution may vary.Refilling toner cartridges
More recently it has become possible to refill toner cartridges and although it can save a lot of money, it can result in poorer quality printing. It should also be noted that inhaling the toner powder carries a health risk. If you do chose to refill your toner cartridges, ensure than you are in a well ventilated room and are wearing gloves and a dust mask.While some manufacturers have included a plug on the outside of the cartridge which enables you to just pour in the new toner, some cartridges do not have the removable toner plug. For cartridges which do not contain a removable plug, a full starter toner refill kit is needed. This will include a device that will form a hole in the cartridge by melting the plastic. Once the hole has been created, the toner can then be poured into the cartridge and the hole sealed using a self adhesive patch or even strong masking tape.
Health risks
Rumours that using laser printers poses a health risk have been circulating ever since they became commonplace in offices. The reason for the health concern can be attributed to the fine toner powder using in the cartridges.It is said that up to 30% of laser printers emit harmful micro molecular particles [1] from the toner powder which can lead to lung irritation and in the worse case scenario, even lung cancer. Some studies have shown that these fine particles can also aggravate pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis.
As the toner compound is made up of plastic resin, iron powder and carbon black, using a laser printer or photocopier can also cause other irritations like scratchy eyes, headaches and itchy skin due to the carbon black component. The reason for this is that the carbon black may contain carcinogens [2] which cause these irritations when they come into contact with the skin.
Although the health risk is low, it is still advisable to ensure that laser printers are kept in well ventilated rooms and that staff responsible for changing the toners should always wash their hands thoroughly after handling the toner cartridge.
